JUDGMENT AGAINST PPG INDUSTRIES

A federal appeals court reduced by $30 million a judgment against PPG Industries in a lawsuit filed by a wood-products maker over deficient wood treatment. The Court of Appeals for the Eighth United States Circuit in St. Louis lowered the damages PPG must pay Marvin Lumber and Cedar Company and Marvin Windows of Tennessee for damage to their reputation stemming from a PPG treatment called PILT. The ruling reduced to $126.1 million a 2002 award won by the Marvin companies. PPG ''is evaluating its options for further appeals'' and will reserve up to $150 million for the judgment in the first quarter of 2005, said Jeff Worden, a spokesman.
