Buzz Aldrin: Invest in Nasa to beat the Chinese to Mars

Buzz Aldrin: Invest in Nasa to beat the Chinese to Mars
Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the Moon, has issued a stark warning that America must invest now in the space agency Nasa, or surrender leadership of space exploration to Russia and China.

Destination moon: The Chinese are on course to make their first landing as early as 2017 - ahead of a return visit by America

In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph, Mr Aldrin revealed that he intends to lobby Barack Obama and John McCain, the two US presidential candidates, in an effort to ensure they find sufficient funds for Nasa's goal to establish a permanent base on the Moon and then send a manned mission to Mars.

Nasa celebrates its 50th anniversary this year but faces grave embarrassment. The ill-fated Shuttle is due to make its last flight in 2010 but it will be a further five years before its replacement, the Ares rocket and Orion crew capsule - also intended for trips to the moon - are ready.

In that time American astronauts will have to hitch lifts on Russian Soyuz flights merely to visit the International Space Station.

Amid policy disputes, Qaeda grows in Pakistan

WASHINGTON: Late last year, top Bush administration officials decided to take a step they had long resisted. They drafted a secret plan to authorize the Pentagon's Special Operations forces to launch missions into the snow-capped mountains of Pakistan to capture or kill top leaders of Al Qaeda.

Intelligence reports for more than a year had been streaming in about Osama bin Laden's terror network rebuilding in the Pakistani tribal areas, a problem that had been exacerbated by years of missteps in Washington and the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, sharp policy disagreements, and turf battles between American counterterrorism agencies....More

World food prices may rise due to Midwest flooding

ST. LOUIS -- Levees on the cresting Mississippi River held on Sunday as the worst U.S. Midwest flooding in 15 years began to ebb, but multibillion-dollar crop losses may boost world food prices for years.

Water levels on the river receded for the second straight day as mostly clear weather gave saturated areas a chance to start draining. Forecasts for similar dry weather in coming days gave further encouragement. More

VIENNA STADIUM'S NAZI HISTORY : Euro 2008 Finals Venue Hides a Sinister Past

When over 50,000 roaring fans fill Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium Sunday to watch Germany take on Spain in the Euro 2008 final, chances are they won't be reflecting on the stadium's dark place in history.

The Prater Stadium, now known as the Ernst Happel Stadium, was once used by the Gestapo to hold Jews on their way to being murdered at a concentration camp.

When the fans of the German and Spanish teams throng into Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium on Sunday to watch the Euro 2008 finals they will be hoping to enjoy a day of thrilling sport in Austria's most historic stadium. Many may not realize, however, that this history spans back to the 1930s when the stadium served as a Nazi barracks and then as a prison where Jews were held before being deported to concentration camps.

The dark chapter in the stadium's history began in 1934, three years after it was completed and christened the Prater Stadium. That May, Austria's fascist Chancellor Engelbert Dolfuss stood in the stadium and announced the country's new constitution, which abolished democracy in Austria and made it an authoritarian state. 1999 Clinton Admin Said Osama working with Iraq--To Get WMD's!

In what I find a great "lost" video is a 1999 ABC News report making the claim (from the Clinton administration) that Osama Bin Lade was working with Iraq to gain Nuclear weapons of mass destruction. This doesn't mean that this report is true, I will leave that up to history to determine. I am just pointing out that there really has been no difference between Clinton and Bush with regards to Iraq and the liberal media is not telling you that! Video From 1999 ABC Report! Interesting!

Changing attitudes toward nuclear energy indicate the Continent may soon experience a nuclear renaissance.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel firmly supports a return to German nuclear power. Merkel voiced her views during a top-level meeting in the Bavarian town of Erding on Monday. During the meeting between Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union officials, Merkel openly advocated reversing official government policy that stipulates a phase-out of nuclear power by 2021.

New World Order: Rebirth of the Holy Roman Empire

America’s single superpower status is fading into history. Which of the emerging powers will fill the gap? By Ron Fraser

The United States is presently saturated with presidential election propaganda. As a result, the mass media devote little or no time to the story of the year: that in 2008 America entered observable, measurable decline.

“The Post-American World” blared the cover of the May 12 edition of Newsweek. In the cover story, Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International, observed, “[F]or the first time in living memory the United States does not seem to be leading the charge. Americans see that a new world is coming into being, but fear it is one being shaped in distant lands and by foreign people” (emphasis mine throughout).

The May/June edition of Foreign Affairs, the periodic journal of the Council on Foreign Relations (cfr), asked, “Is America in Decline?” Inside, cfr President Richard Haass stated, “The reality of American strength should not mask the relative decline of the United States’s position in the world—and with this relative decline in power an absolute decline in influence and independence.” Haass noted that many Asian economies are growing two to three times faster than that of the United States. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal this week signed into law the Louisiana Science Education Act, which allows school districts to permit teachers to present evidence, analysis and critique of evolution and other prevalent scientific theories in public school classrooms.

The law came to the governor's desk after overwhelming support in the legislature, including a unanimous vote in the state's Senate and a 93-4 vote in the House.

The act has been criticized by some as an attempt to insert religion into science education and hailed by others as a blow for academic freedom in the face of pressure to ignore flaws in politically correct scientific theories.

Robert Crowther, director of communications for The Discovery Institute, a Seattle-based think tank on science and culture, called the act necessary. MORE...

No, McCain Isn't 'Doomed'

No, McCain Isn't 'Doomed'

There is evidence that fall campaigns, which tend to focus voters on big-picture issues, usually help Republicans. In 1976, Gerald Ford was seen as a goner during the summer but rallied to finish only two points behind Jimmy Carter. A dozen years later, Michael Dukakis led George H.W. Bush in June and July. He lost by eight points in the fall. In 1992, Bill Clinton had a 10-point lead around Labor Day. He won by only five and a half points. Even Bob Dole closed a 12-point Labor Day gap to only eight points by November 1996. If that history is a guide, a focused McCain campaign that clearly contrasts conservative and liberal approaches to the issues should have a good chance of winning.

After all, it isn't easy for Democrats to win in a two-person race for president. Since FDR's last victory in 1944, only one Democrat – Lyndon Johnson in 1964 – has won 50.1% or more of the popular vote. Both of Bill Clinton's victories were aided by Ross Perot's presence on the ballot.More

Barclays warns of a financial storm as Federal Reserve's credibility crumbles

US central bank accused of unleashing an inflation shock that will rock financial markets, reports Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

Barclays Capital has advised clients to batten down the hatches for a worldwide financial storm, warning that the US Federal Reserve has allowed the inflation genie out of the bottle and let its credibility fall "below zero".

"We're in a nasty environment," said Tim Bond, the bank's chief equity strategist. "There is an inflation shock underway. This is going to be very negative for financial assets. We are going into tortoise mood and are retreating into our shell. Investors will do well if they can preserve their wealth."

Barclays Capital said in its closely-watched Global Outlook that US headline inflation would hit 5.5pc by August and the Fed will have to raise interest rates six times by the end of next year to prevent a wage-spiral. If it hesitates, the bond markets will take matters into their own hands. "This is the first test for central banks in 30 years and they have fluffed it. They have zero credibility, and the Fed is negative if that's possible. It has lost all credibility," said Mr Bond.

The grim verdict on Ben Bernanke's Fed was underscored by the markets yesterday as the dollar fell against the euro following the bank's dovish policy statement on Wednesday.

Traders said the Fed seemed to be rowing back from rate rises. The effect was to propel oil to $138 a barrel, confirming its role asa sort of "anti-dollar" and as a market reproach to Washington's easy-money policies.

The Fed's stimulus is being transmitted to the 45-odd countries linked to the dollar around world. The result is surging commodity prices. Global inflation has jumped from 3.2pc to 5pc over the last year. More

    The murder of US manufacturing

    The murder of US manufacturing
    By Martin Hutchinson

GE's announcement a week ago that it would accept offers for its appliances business marked the death-knell of yet another US manufacturing business, one among so many in US manufacturing's long and seemingly unstoppable downtrend since 1980.

That decline may seem an inevitable historical trend, and Wall Street's analysts would claim that the US economy can prosper just fine without it. Yet impartial analysts of the putrefying corpse of US manufacturing capability are forced into an inescapable question: did it die of natural causes or was it murdered? MORE....

Supreme Court finds individual right to own guns

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Thursday, for the first time in the nation's history, that individual Americans have the right to own guns for personal use, and struck down a strict gun control law in the nation's capital.

The landmark 5-4 ruling marked the first time in nearly 70 years that the high court has addressed whether the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects an individual right to keep and bear arms, rather than a right tied to service in a state militia.

Video Report. (CNSNews.com) - People in China affiliated with the communist government there hacked into computers in the offices of both Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) and Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.), apparently in search of information about Chinese dissidents, according to the congressmen, who spoke with Cybercast News Service last week.

While the matter is under federal investigation, the hackings took place in late 2006 and early 2007, and "top IT" people alerted him about the security breach, Smith said. Smith is a senior Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and often speaks out about communist China's human rights abuses.
